The East Kew FC community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of a remarkable man, leader, teammate and dear friend, George “Kopsi” Markopoulos.
George’s journey with East Kew FC began in 2002, when the club was known as East Kew Olympiakos. As a player, his versatility allowed him to excel in attack, defence and even goalkeeping. He earned multiple honours, including Top Goal Scorer and Best and Fairest, and served proudly as vice-captain. His commitment and leadership were evident from the very beginning.
It was as President (2005-2012) however, that George’s legacy was truly cemented. He took the reins during one of the club’s most difficult periods: competing in the amateur Victorian Soccer League, facing financial strain, limited resources, recruitment challenges, and years of modest results. Through determination, vision and his remarkable ability to bring people together, he transformed the club’s trajectory.
Under his leadership, the foundations were laid for the club’s transition into Football Victoria (FFV). What was once a struggling amateur side has grown into a thriving football community, now proudly fielding junior programs, senior men’s teams and, in recent years, a women’s squad.
Even outside the presidency, George remained an active and passionate committee member (2004-2023). He drove sponsorship initiatives, championed community events such as the “East Kew Family Days,” and built vital relationships, including early discussions with Boroondara Council that contributed to the modernised facilities at Willsmere Park. His influence extended well beyond the club and into the broader Greek and local football communities, where he was widely respected and admired.
Above all, George’s greatest legacy is the community he helped build. His booming smile, generous spirit and larger-than-life presence remain woven into the fabric of our club. What we enjoy today traces back to his tireless efforts and love for East Kew United Olympiacos.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Georgia, and son, Jonathan, the two people he cherished most in life.
Vale George “Kopsi” Markopoulos. Your legacy lives on in every player who pulls on the shirt, every child who takes the field, and every family that calls this club home.
The funeral will take place on the 6th of March at 11.30 am, Holy Church of St George, 64 David Street, Thornbury.
